Zoom Class Catch-ups

Posted on Friday, May 15, 2020

Dear Parents/Guardians,
Eyrecourt NS is hoping to host Zoom meetings with the class groupings. This will be a chance for teachers and pupils to check in, catch up and discuss what they are working on at home.
This is new territory for teaching and learning and in preparing for this, the staff received advice from other schools, curriculum support and computer professionals.

To help us get the most benefit we ask that the following etiquette be adhered to:

1. Parents present
A parent or guardian must be present at log-in. The senior pupils should be fine after log-in and can be allowed to continue their Zoom alone with their parents within earshot but younger pupils will need parental supervision for the session.

2. Dress appropriately
You will be on camera!

3. Be aware of your surroundings
Pick a room that is quiet and does not have people passing through.  Make sure the view behind you is OK before you join the chat.

3. Mute your microphone when you’re not talking
Only turn it on if you are asked to speak. Muting your microphone when you’re not speaking gives others the ability to chime in and share their thoughts without distraction or frustration.

4. Use the hand-up button
You will find a button to put your hand up. Use that so your teacher knows if you want to speak.

5. Keep distractions to a minimum
We will be taking it in turns to speak, it is not fair to the pupil who is speaking if you are distracting others on your video. Sit, listen and wait your turn.

6. No food allowed
We don’t want you dropping crumbs all over your keyboard!  (And it can be quite distracting!)

7. Stay seated and stay present
Do not leave the room or talk on your phone.

8. Be patient
This is new to a lot of people (including teachers!) and it may take time to learn.

The Zoom meeting times and days are as follows:

Ms Treacy:     Monday      10am-10:45am  & Thursday 2:15pm-3pm
Mr Barrett:     Tuesday       10am-10:45am
Ms McGrath:  Monday        12pm-12:45pm

This coming week is a trial, the times and days are subject to change.

A few pointers:
• The Zoom meeting link will be shared in advance by email.
• When you click on the link, you might have to download the Zoom app if you haven’t used it before. You can also access Zoom on your phone. Try it out beforehand and maybe make a Zoom call to a friend or relative.
• Every time you try to join the class Zoom, you will be put in a “waiting room”.  The teacher then sees you in the “waiting room” and admits you.
• The Zoom meeting will be open for 45 minutes. Pupils can join late or leave early.  The teacher will see them in the waiting room.
• If you lose the call, internet acts up or battery dies, just go back to your emails and click on the link for Zoom again.
• Our objective with the Zoom call is a social/wellbeing check in. Attendence is not compulsory and we understand families are busy with working from home and various other obligations.

Best practice states that we should receive consent from Parents before taking part in Zoom calls. If you consent to the guidelines above regarding class Zoom calls, please click on this link, enter your child/childrens names and select “Yes”.
This consent must be received for your child to receive their invitation to their Zoom class call.
